| The
next journey was Prague to Vienna via Cesky Kumlov and the Czech/Austria
border. On our first night in Vienna we headed off to a local eaterie
that serves traditional food in a mini-wheelbarrow. The wheelbarrow
feeds about 5-6 people!! It included schnizels which are delightful.
The local Austria beer is very nice too and served in 1/2L glasses!!
On
the first day I did a walking tour of Vienna and the second I visited
the Spanish Riding School. At this point I realise that I really
don't have a lot to say about Vienna. A lot of people like it, but
personally I wasn't over keen.
Leaving behind the Kaffeehauses, Spanish Riding School, viennese
shopping and Sachertorte (chocolate cake heavily laced with apricot
liqeur - first created in Sacher Hotel), we dodged the trams, buses,
trains, cars, bikes and horses & carriages of Vienna and headed
off into deepest Austria. Our journey took us through the picturesque
Salzburg region, where the hills were "alive with the sound
of music". It is a shame that time was pressing as there is
really quite a lot to do and enjoy in Salzburg. A lot of people
on the trip who stopped there raved about it. Still, time was of
the essence, so it was onwards to Munich...
On the journey from Munich to Venice, we went through the Austrian
Tirol (St. Johann in Tirol, to be precise) where we enjoyed a short
stop. St. Johann is the Adventure Capital of Austria and in a very
beautiful region. Whilst I'm glad that I've visited Vienna, any
return visits to Austria would be better spent in the Salzburg or
Tirol regions.
