Imperial Dunes, California / Arizona borderDay 7/8: Into Arizona - A long long drive to Havasu City. We went via the Imperial Sand Dunes on the Californian side of the California / Arizona border - it was sooooo hot! The driver suggested it may have been somewhere near 50'c. I can't confirm that but I am sure that it would have been hot enough to cook dinner on! Even with sandals on the sand that got underneath your toes burnt them terribly. We moved on quickly, thankful for the invention of air conditioning, over the border into Arizona.

After having lunch at the "largest Burger King in Arizona" (not a boast I know) where the temperature had dropped to a moderate 46'C we headed to River Island State Park near Parker / Parker Dam on the Colorado River. Thankfully we were able to swim in the river as temperatures were reaching 47'c in the shade even at 5.30pm and the wind was so hot it literally burnt the skin off your face. To make matters worse the temp didn't drop below 33'c all night - and I was told the UK was baking at the time... I looked more like a roasted chicken! I have never in my life experienced such heat. I have to confess it was even too warm for me! In the end I slept on the "beach" by the river just on a roll mat which was cooler than anywhere else.

Day 8 it was onto the Grand Canyon. First stop of the day was Havasu City to see the Old London Bridge (as the original bridge was demolished in London and rebuilt here in America). Then it was onto the famous Route 66 where we stopped in Seligman for lunch. Then the Grand Canyon! (See next section)
